October is Fire Prevention Month and it’s important to be educated about the risks of fire in your home AND in your workplace. Commercial fires are more common than you may think so being prepared will aid in taking the appropriate precautions to prevent damage to your worksite.

The most common causes of commercial fires include:

  • Cooking Equipment – any business that serves food (or has a kitchen for employees to prepare food) is at risk for fire. Always have a fire extinguisher near any cooking equipment, no matter how big or small.
  • Heating Equipment – if the heating system overheats it can lead to fire. Proper maintenance is especially important for businesses to avoid possible fires.
  • Electrical and Lighting Issues – with wires behind the walls, it’s not easy to know if something needs replacing. Like the HVAC system in an office building or restaurant – proper upkeep is the best way to prevent fire.
  • Smoking Materials – the rate of fires caused by smoking materials has decreased significantly, however candles also fall into this category so it’s essential to know the rules and never leave a lit candle unattended.
  • Intentional – it’s unfortunate, but there are fires that are intentionally started by people. Not all intentional fires are considered Arson because the fire starter has to have malicious intent for this categorization. Even if the intent isn’t criminal, starting a fire intentionally puts everyone at risk.
